Aa Dekhen Zara : The Review

People who read my previous rant should know that this was coming. A detailed and engaging view on “Aa Dekhen Zara”.I cannot recall when in recent times I have written two reviews back to back but it seems that happy times are back for my blog.  Anyway, more than a year back I wrote a review of the Neil Mukesh Starrer  “Johnny Gaddar” . I have mentioned there that this new lad showed promise. And he doesn’t disappoint here either. The only things I didn’t think has gone quite right here is the fact that his role has become a lot stereotypical. He is dirt poor, he gets a means to make lot of money not through conventional means and finally pumping up adrenaline to make the end justify the means. But this movie is not about Neil only-theres a lot into it.Lets start with the trailer:

Synopsis: Neil is an extremely poor  freelance photographer often having his a$$ boned by camera thieves, goons and of course, credit card recovery agents. Whatever meager means he has is because of a not so generous editor of a newspaper. One fine day he gets  a news that his photography mentor- his grandfather has expired and he should be there at his house to pay his respects. He goes there and comes to know from his advocate that his grandfather was working on something that made him take huge loans against his assets. Also he left a letter for Neil.

The letter...

The letter...

Combined with the message in the letter he uses a few other verbal clues to finally grab a wooden ship on display inside an aquarium. The ship reveals the details of a company whose business is private holding of valuables.Once there he gets  a bag which contains a strange watch and a camera.Soon enough he comes to know that the camera can take pictures of the future.Predictably he amasses huge wealth by forseeing future stock market, horse race and of course lottery. Now he soon learns that there are other forces at play and all are bent on getting that camera from him. From this point the movie is about how he dodges all of them and finally survives to die another day.

One of the other forces at play ......... Major BOOBAGE!

Impressions: The movie is not a high octane thriller. Nor does it contain Akshay grade mindless stunts. Neil is our real life hero- he is beaten to pulp by bad people and he doesn’t kill a bear with his bare hands all the while trying to fornicate a saree clad lass in a lengthy dream song sequence. He is our average Joe. He gets beaten,he gets manhandled by recovery agents and he has hots for a budding bongo DJ. The story banks on scifi as a theme in present time and cares less about exploring the timeline through alternate realities. Ideally the story doesn’t stand a chance given the fact that Neil’s view to tomorrow might as well be one of too many. Each time he gets a wind about the future he is changing his own timeline in the process and the future getting captured on film may or may not be the future reality. Also we do not know who captain is and why the heck he knows so much about the camera. Though RAW agent Puri gives some back story , we fail to understand why even being a RAW agent he kills a fellow agent and reports a lie to his superior. Now,since both the characters of Puri and Captain are grossly left unexplored, the continuity is hurt in the process and the viewer is left asking for more. Also moments before the ending credits roll, we see Neil exploring the other clocklike device and we see a sequence very reminiscent of the movie Jumper. Also I believe that this is an indication of an upcoming sequel.

Ahhh.....sequel you say ..... lemme take a self snap and check

Verdict: It is heartening that scifi has grown up since the Mr. India days. Also it is heartening to see that we are seeing everyday characters like Neil taking up lead roles in story centric movies rather than Hero centric movies where its all about his unbuttoning act ! The degree of professional editing as well as effects is also beyond ordinary. As usual the background score adds up to the tension successfully though the song and dance sequences seems like waste. A scifi themed movie can take action sequences for granted but not song and dance sequences. Particularly the Dance sequence with the Pinoy thugs is absolutely so totally out of place. Shots like these are material for the general masses and do not quite add value to the ecosystem. Also I fail to understand the significance of the naming convention.”Aa Dekhen Jara” (Come lets see) is a showy statement in Hindi taken from the famous Bacchan starrer song Aa dekhen Zara…kisme kitna hai Dum…. (Come lets see how much guts you have…..) . The movie is so not entirely about about showing off…. a scifi movie can never be a show off…… so coupled with a few other factors I really do not believe that this movie is going to turn out as a potboiler. So Neil, lets wait for another movie for your Superstardom…..
